One of the most beautiful towns in France, Carcassonne has long been a popular tourist destination for visitors wanting to see the breathtaking walled settlement for themselves.  Saved from demolition by famed French restoration architect Viollet-le-Duc, Carcassonne's fortifications can be traced back to the Roman occupation of the area in the first century BC.  Since that time Carcassonne has seen Visigoths, Saracens, Franks, and finally French owners, becoming at one stage the line of defence that kept France safe from the Spanish Aragonese.  The town's long and diverse history has left it with a legacy of popular tourist attractions, including the fortified walls, the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, the Pont Vieux and Pont Marengo bridges that cross the Aude river, the Museum of the Middle Ages and the Lac de la Cavayére lake.  Located as it is just off of the A61/E80 Motorway, a short drive to the east brings travellers into Narbonne and on to the Mediterranean coast, whilst driving along the same motorway to the north-west takes motorists into Toulouse.

Carcassonne is serviced by the Carcassonne Salvaza Airport (Aeroport de Carcassonne en Pays Cathare), situated a few kilometres to the west of the town off of the D119 Route de Montreal.  The airport is small and is visited by a single airline, Ryan Air, which offers scheduled flights to and from Dublin, Cork, East Midlands, Shannon, London, Liverpool and Brussels.  There are several car hire facilities available at the airport, including Hertz, Europcar, Lov'Location, Ada and Avis.  Like many towns in France, winter temperatures can be quite cold (dipping below freezing) and summer temperatures warm (sometimes above 30°C), so it is important that you rent a car that is fitted with a heater or air-conditioner accordingly.
